Study Domestic

FIU students have the opportunity to participate in short term programs domestically with other FIU students led by an FIU faculty member and/or administrator. As a participant in the program, you will be required to submit pre-departure items and documents issued by the Office of Education Abroad. Please note that the Office of Education Abroad regularly sends emails to your FIU inbox.

Study Domestic Travel Requirements

The minimum GPA requirement to participate in a Study Domestic travel program is a 2.5. However, each program has a specific set of academic requirements as determined by the Faculty Director and/or Coordinator for that program.

Individual dates and deadlines are different for each program.

    • Contact the Faculty Director and/or Coordinator and ask about program application deadlines, eligibility requirements, program costs, and courses, if applicable. 

What to expect upon acceptance into a Domestic Travel

Your faculty director and/or coordinator will inform you as to whether you’ve been accepted into the program for which you’ve applied. All students who have been accepted into a Study Domestic program must follow the steps listed below in the FIU Education Abroad portal.

  • AlertTraveler®

    AlertTraveler® is designed to keep you informed of critical events that may impact you while traveling and will allow FIU to better assist you in the event of an emergency.  Instructions on how to download this app will be provided in the abroad portal. 

  • Course Registration Process

    Registration for your program will be done by the department sponsoring this domestic travel experience. 

     

  • Mandatory Orientation and Pre-departure Forms

    As a program participant, you may be required to attend a series of mandatory class meetings and pre-departure orientations. This orientation will provide you with helpful information regarding safety and security matters for your upcoming trip.  During your pre-departure orientation meeting, you will be asked to review, sign and submit your pre-departure forms. Please consult with your faculty director and/or coordinator on dates and times for those meetings so that you can plan to be in attendance.

  • Medical information

    All participants are required to submit a medical information form. The medical form must be filled out by your physician or family doctor. This form can be found on your application (abroad.fiu.edu).

  • Restrictions

    Non-Students/Spouses/Children and Study Domestic Travel

    Non-students, spouses, domestic partners, and/or children are NOT allowed to join the faculty director and/or the travel group for the domestic travel. 

    Non-Student: Any person not acting as a faculty or program leader or trip assistant who participates on an FIU Domestic Travel. 

    Domestic Partner: A person of same or opposite sex with whom you live, to whom you are emotionally committed, with whom you share a primary residence, and with whom you share joint responsibilities for common welfare and financial obligations.

    Children: The program director’s children or legal dependents.
